The company was organized in 1924 to acquire the properties of the Mesaba Motor Company, which operated several bus routes in northern Minnesota. Following acquisition, the properties were transferred to a sibling firm, the Northland Transportation Company (Minnesota), which operated the properties and acquired additional out of state lines. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
